.com celebrates 25 years

News — 8:44 am

Just three letters and a punctuation mark, found today at the end of so many web sites and emails, such as microsoft.com, yahoo.com and google.com. The ‘dotcom’ era that we are told we now live in is derived from the most popular ‘top level domain’ (TLD) online, which has recently celebrated its 25th birthday.

The first .com domain was symbolics.com, registered March 15, 1985. Today, there are over 80 million of them. .com was also one of several added around the same time, it was joined by a handful of others, including .edu, .net and .arpa – but it is .com, prevalent in so many companies’ email and web addresses, that rules the roost.

The Internet is, of course, still growing. Recent additions include .coop (used to great effect by the chain of community shops), .aero, .travel, .name and .info, and campaigners continue to encourage further additions, ensuring the next 25 years will continue to see a diverse collection of domains registered online.

Internet Explorer 9

Editorial — Tags: , , — 3:23 pm

Microsoft have released a platform preview of their latest and greatest browser, Internet Explorer 9. The browser only runs on Vista and Windows 7, which means Windows XP users are likely to be left behind from future updates.

IE9 boasts an impressive increase in speed and vastly improved support for new and current standards for web development. Microsoft have been working with the web standards organisation, W3C to ensure their newest browser meets all the revelant standards – although there is still some way to go it seems.

Nonetheless it is a step in the right direction and can surely be a positive step for web developers looking forward to using the latest and greatest technologies for as wide an audience as possible. As the dominant browser worldwide, any new versions of Internet Explorer mark a huge impact on the industry. Microsoft’s new browser will continue to be developed over the coming months and we will be monitoring its progress.
